Orthotics are devices worn in your shoes that provide correction to your feet, helping them to function more efficiently. Poor foot function and alignment may be the cause of various pains such as foot, knee, hip and back pain.
We facilitate custom fitted orthotic prescription for our patients through Elite Feet Orthotics, located in the West Perth facility. Foot Specialist and Leading Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr. Ben Hewitt, supplies this cutting edge service using "Gaitscan" computer technology. Conveniently we can arrange an appointment for this service without a referral.
Gaitscan is a state of the art computer hardware and software system that helps assess and analyze your feet. This analysis combined with our experience and knowledge detects abnormal foot function which may be affecting other parts of your body.
Despite the vital role of foot mechanics in good health, until very recently there has been no way of accurately measuring how the foot functions as we walk.
The foot is in contact with the ground for about 0.8 seconds when walking and about 0.25 seconds when running, far too fast to determine normal or abnormal foot function with the naked eye, even for the most experienced practitioner.
Custom orthotics have been used to control foot function for many years, but their prescription has relied on outdated methods of assessment like plaster casts and video (walking) analysis. These assessment methods are not able to correctly determine how the foot functions as we walk and so are not fully accurate in diagnosis and treatment.
Digital gait scanning technology allows us for the first time to truly understand how forces and the timing of those forces occur across the foot as we walk. By comparing the results of these scans against the ideal foot function, in addition to having an in-depth understanding of biomechanics, common misalignments of the foot, postural assessment and other health and lifestyle factors that are relevant to the patient, effective treatment can be delivered.
Where misalignments of the foot are the cause of abnormal foot function (as is considered to be the case for around 70% of the population), a Gaitscan assessment is able to detect problems even before resultant pain and dysfunction develop.
By controlling and optimising foot function even without existing pain and dysfunction, you can significantly reduce the risk of developing some of the many related health problems later in life.
It is now possible to prescribe a high quality, semi-rigid, thermoplastic memory orthotic that gently and consistently facilitates a more natural foot movement and alignment with every single step. This realigns and stabilizes the bones in your feet, restoring natural walking patterns. These advances make the orthotic very comfortable to wear and allows easy fitting in all casual and sporting footwear, unlike traditional orthotics.
If any of the statements below pertain to you, a Gaitscan could be of great benefit to your body.

Ultrasound is a medical imaging technique that uses high frequency sound waves and their echoes. The technique is similar to the echolocation used by bats and SONAR used by submarines.
The same safe, Real Time Ultrasound imaging that is used in pregnancy is now used by us to assess and retrain correct muscle function of spinal support muscles in patients with back and postural pain.
The ultrasound machine transmits sound waves using an external hand-held probe. The sound waves travel into your body until they hit a boundary between the tissues (eg. between soft tissue and bone). Some of the sound waves get reflected back to the probe, while some travel on further until they reach another boundary and get reflected. Reflected waves are then picked up by the probe and relayed back to the machine. The machine calculates the distance from the probe to the boundaries using the speed of sound in tissue and the time of the each echo's return. The distances and intensities of the echoes are displayed on the screen, forming a moving two dimensional image.
Real Time Ultrasound allows us and you to see the spinal support muscles whilst they are working in real time inside of you.
This immediate visual feedback improves your ability to learn to control your stabilising muscles, speeding up recovery time and producing a longer, more curative outcome for chronic back pain.
Using the Real Time Ultrasound your spinal muscle function will be assessed and you will be shown any anomalies, if present. You will be introduced to new ways of using your muscles and will be able to see the changes occuring in real time.
After a week or two of incorporating the new techniques into your exercises and daily activities we will reassess to check your progress and adjust performance. Once good technique is achieved it becomes as natural as any other movements and further treatment is usually not required.
We have pioneered one of the first paperless clinic in WA with all staff being provided with a powerful computer tablet which automatically updates us on your progress and ensures a coordinated effort and quality control no matter who your treating Physiotherapist is.
This reaffirms our commitment to providing service excellence and cutting edge technology in all we do.
This new technology also enables instant communication to you, for excercise programs for example, or your referring doctor or specialist if required and records all reports and scans producing necessary correspondence at the touch of a screen. Sophisticated encryption guarantees your security. For the first time your scans can be viewed digitially and even photos and video recordings of your progress and for bio feedback are possible.
Being paperless also puts us at the forefront of being a good corporate citizen by doing our bit for the planet, a reponsibility we take seriously.
We provide every patient with a comprehensive assessment, diagnosis and treatment plan. Our hands on approach to management ensures each patient receives the greatest benefit in the shortest possible time.
